When the Queen bee is absent from the hive, you run the risk of having laying workers. Worker bees have the ability to lay eggs but they will all be infertile and turn into drones. Laying workers may also lay more than one egg per cell as well. When you see this, you need to re-queen the colony as soon as possible.

It’s always good to have a few beekeeping books on hand. The Hive and the Honey bee and The ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture are excellent books to keep on hand and are fairly up to date. Both books are about 700 pages each so they cover almost every question anyone would possibly have on beekeeping.

Honey Bee workers in the winter can live up to 6 month where in the summer they live for about 3 weeks. Talk about slave labor being worked to death.

In the winter month, honeybees can’t defend their hives from mice. To prevent mice from getting into the hive you use an entrance reducer. This helps keep the draft out of the hive and mice out as well.

During the winter months it is not advisable to use the Boardman feeder. This would cause bees to outside the hive and thus die from cold. It would be much better to use the Division Board Feeder due to it being inside the hive and helps feed the bees without the bees leaving the cluster.
The hive top feeder is also a good choice for internally feeding the bees as well. Heat from the cluster moves up in a hive and thus keeping any bee going up and down to the top of the hive, warm.

To make Sugar syrup the formula is 2 part sugar 1 part water. Mix in a pan over the stove until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture becomes like a syrup. Then your Done!
To mix Fumidil-B for Nosema treatment mix 7/8 teaspoon to one gallon of sugar syrup.

I’ve had honey sitting in my basement for the last 10 years. Sense then I’ve joined the military and got out. The honey is still sweet and seems to be able to last forever. I was in middle school when it was harvested. That makes it oh about 13 yrs old.
