Pollen Supplement Patties
One Cake
2 ounces pollen
6 ounces soybean flour 51/2 ounces water
101/2 ounces sugar
Thirty-two Cakes
4 pounds pollen
12 pounds soybean flour 11 pounds water
21 pounds sugar
Another way is to substitute the Pollen for Soybean flour.
1 Part water
3 Parts Soybean flour
In heavy sugar syrup
Sugar Syrup
2 Part Sugar, 1 Part water
Put both part into a pan on the stove and heat it up until all the sugar is dissolved and you have a syrup mixture. In the 2:1 is used mainly in the fall and 1:1 is used in the spring.
Sugar Candy
15 pounds sugar
3 pounds glucose or white syrup
4 cups water
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
Dissolve the sugar in the water by stirring and boiling the mixture until the temperature of the syrup rises to 242T. Let syrup cool to 180°F, then beat until thick. Pour the candy into molds lined with wax paper. Place a cake of sugar on two small, 1/2-inch square strips of wood in an empty super above the cluster of bees. Cover the candy and the space around it with cloth or newspaper to keep it warm.
Crisco Patties
The Purpose of a Crisco patty is that the bees will rub up against this while in the hive and make themselves slippery to Tracheal mites. This is a minor measure toward helping your bees stay healthy.
I have 2 Recipes here:
Option A: 1 Part Crisco and 2 Parts sugar
Option B: 1/3 lb Crisco
2/3 lb Granulated Sugar
Option to add to both Recipes: 2 Tbl Tablespoons of Terramycin Soluble pouder TM-25
Note: You can keep these in the hive all year around unless you plan to add Terramycin to the mixture. If you do use Terramycin, remember to remove the patty before the honey flow
