Beekeeping Tip of the Day!!

When the Queen bee is absent from the hive, you run the risk of having laying workers. Worker bees have the ability to lay eggs but they will all be infertile and turn into drones. Laying workers may also lay more than one egg per cell as well. When you see this, you need to re-queen the colony as soon as possible.

Speed King Electric Knife

Well, I’ve used the Speed King uncapping knife in the past and this is a must have for any honey production environment.  It takes a little time to heat up but is well worth it when you have a good 50 frames of honey to harvest.  These thing run about $100 but the only cheaper option would be to get a capping scratch-er.  Basically the way it works is the knife heats up like an iron.  This melts the wax as it cuts to make it a lot easier to uncap the frames before putting them into the extractor.  I would recommend this to anyone.

Beekeeping Tip of the Day

It’s always good to have a few beekeeping books on hand.  The Hive and the Honey bee and The ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture are excellent books to keep on hand and are fairly up to date.  Both books are about 700 pages each so they cover almost every question anyone would possibly have on beekeeping.
